The Captain is both legally and by our definition responsible for the safety of the Crew and vessel throughout the deployment. SAR related decisions are to be made in accordance with HoM. Given the small size and low hierarchy 2 duties allow that. The Captain leads maritime trainings and coherence of the crew.

Requirements:

  • Fluent English
  • Any license that allows to go further than 12 miles out with a pleasure craft, for example the German SBF See
  • Radio Operator’s Certificate
  • Experience in SAR: at least 2 missions (not necessarily as Captain)
  • Excellent communication and decision-making skills

Desired:

  • Italian language skills
  • STCW approved 200 GT master License or more
  • basic first aid training
  • experience as skipper on similar crafts (twin engine, no bow thruster)
  • good knowledge of the context of migrations in the central Med, the Italian political situation and European migration policies
  • experience working with volunteers, some of whom with limited nautical experience
  • experience with living together with a diverse yet small group of people
  • Any other relevant language: French, Arabic, Bengali, etc
