Für die MARE*GO suchen wir Menschen, die ehrenamtlich mit uns auf Einsätze fahren. Dabei sind einsatzerfahrene Menschen gewünscht, da wir nur wenig Platz für die Crew haben. Alle machen alles, aber bestimmte Fähigkeiten werden gebraucht. Und wir wollen die Möglichkeit geben, dass SAR-Erfahrungen bei uns gemacht werden können.

The Head of Deployment facilitates communication and working together within the crew. They are also in a position to communicate with external actors, other vessels, land structures, coast guard, authorities. They are capable of taking decisions, both by facilitating discussions and by taking the lead when the situation requires it.

Requirements:

  • Fluent English
  • Advanced knowledge of the political and operational situation in the central Med as well as the legal framework of our operations, insofar as necessary for the safe and confident communication with (so-called) authorities.
  • Awareness of power structures within society and one’s own role in a position of power
  • Experience in facilitating discussions and decision making processes in teams
  • Experience in SAR: at least 2 missions (not necessarily as HoM)

Desired:

  • Italian language skills
  • Nautical experience

The Captain is both legally and by our definition responsible for the safety of the Crew and vessel throughout the deployment. SAR related decisions are to be made in accordance with HoM. Given the small size and low hierarchy 2 duties allow that. The Captain leads maritime trainings and coherence of the crew.

Requirements:

  • Fluent English
  • Any license that allows to go further than 12 miles out with a pleasure craft, for example the German SBF See
  • Radio Operator’s Certificate
  • Experience in SAR: at least 2 missions (not necessarily as Captain)
  • Excellent communication and decision-making skills

Desired:

  • Italian language skills
  • STCW approved 200 GT master License or more
  • basic first aid training
  • experience as skipper on similar crafts (single engine, heavy hull)
  • good knowledge of the context of migrations in the central Med, the Italian political situation and European migration policies
  • experience working with volunteers, some of whom with limited nautical experience
  • experience with focusing a small group of people to prioritize jobs
  • Any other relevant language: French, Arabic, Bengali, etc

The Medic on board is responsible for having an overview and providing the best care to people in distress at sea, whether on a boat in distress or on board MARE*GO. There is one medic on board, medical facilities and care are limited to first aid and emergency response.Triage, constant assessments and quick and good decision-making play a major role. In operations, they are part of the RIB Crew and do the first assessment. The person should feel confident in writing short medic reports for handovers to other vessel/Italian authorities, and also provide basic medical training for other crew members.

Requirements:

  • Fluent English
  • Medical education with two or more years of experience as professional
  • Experience working in context with limited capacities and need for autonomous and responsible decision-making

Desired:

  • Experience in SAR as part of the medic crew
  • good spoken level of French and/or Arabic and/or Italian
  • Deck-skills, when the RHIB is out
  • Experience on smaller crafts /Rhib-driving skills
  • Good knowledge of the context of migrations in the central Med, the Italian political situation and European migration policies

The Cultural Mediator / Guest Care is the person responsible for establishing and maintaining the communication with people in distress at sea. They will do so from the RIB, together with the driver during rescues. They will have strong communication and participate in the decision making during the first assessment on the distress case. They also organize basic Guest Care, whether people are taken on board or not, together with all the crew.

Requirements:

  • Fluent English
  • Experience with crowd management / conflict resolution/ mediation
  • Experience with responsibility over communication, organization and decision making in similar contexts
  • Good knowledge of the context of migrations in the central Med, the Italian political situation and European migration policies
  • Good spoken level of French and/or Arabic

Desired:

  • Experience in SAR: at least 1 mission as Cultural Mediator/in the Guestcare team with good references
  • Experience on smaller crafts /deck /Rhib-driving skills
  • Experience in training others on crowdmanagement/ non violent communication / protection
  • Experience with organising food/NFI distributions
  • Experience with living together with a diverse yet small group of people
  • Any other relevant language: Italian, Bengali, etc

The RIB Driver with civil SAR Experience is driving the first RIB and responsible for the first assessment operation outside the range of the MARE*GO. Important jobs are to keep the situation under control together with the Cultural Mediator, communicate with HoD. They support the Captain in training other crew members on basic line handling and deck work, as well as using SAR equipment. They are the designated RIB driver when deemed necessary to use the smaller rescue boat, and are additionally the main support for Guest Care.

Requirements:

  Experience of sailing/ deck work on small vessels

  experience with crowd management / conflict resolution/ mediation

  • RIB driving skills and certificate (pleasure Craft License, RYA level 2, equivalent or above)
  • Experience in working with engines

Particularly desired:

  good spoken level of French and/or Arabic

  experience with team work and food/NFI distributions

The Engineer on board is the person responsible for maintenance and repairs of all the technic. In operations, they switch to be the second RIB Driver. They also support with deck and guest care work, whenever other duties allow.

Requirements:

  • Fluent English
  • Experience in engine maintenance and troubleshooting 
  • Experience of sailing / helm on small vessels

Desired:

  • Experience in SAR
  • Experience with maintenance of Electric Systems (Battery system, engine controls etc)
  • basic first aid training
  • Deck skills
  • Experience with living together with a diverse yet small group of people
  • Any relevant language: Italian, French, Arabic, Bengali, etc
